Baku Olympic Stadium (BOS) is the largest stadium in Azerbaijan, designed and built around Boyukshor Lake in accordance with international standards of UEFA, FIFA, and IAAF. The foundation stone of BOS was laid on June 6, 2011, and it is the 45th largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 68,700 spectators. Construction of 225,000 m² of the total 650,000 m² area was completed in February 2015.
The six-storey stadium, with a height of 65.7 meters, was put into operation on March 6, 2015, and officially opened on March 18 of the same year in the presence of President Ilham Aliyev.
The main tenants of the stadium include:
  • Azerbaijan National Football Team
  • CBC Sport TV
  • GYM Olympiyski fitness center (1,000 m²)
  • Olympia Fighting Club (Muay Thai, Wushu-Sanda, MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing)
  • SPORTSTER mini-courts
  • Premier League teams using reserve natural grass fields
The stadium has hosted major international events, including:
  • Baku 2015 European Games (opening/closing ceremonies and athletics)
  • Islamic Solidarity Games 2017
  • UEFA U-17 European Championship
  • UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches (Qarabag FC)
  • Matches of the Azerbaijan national team
  • UEFA Euro 2020 (held in 2021, including quarter-final match)
The complex includes several hotels, parking for 3,617 cars, and 81,574 m² of green space. The stadium also features:
  • 127 VVIP/VIP/CIP suites (capacity: 720 spectators)
  • 25,200 m² of premium interior space
  • Additional parking for 3,078 cars
  • A 1,800-seat warm-up field
  • Data center and auxiliary buildings
Since 2016, BOS has been a member of ESSMA (European Stadium Safety Organisation) and has been included in the UEFA Elite Stadiums list since 2019 alongside Allianz Arena, Aviva Stadium, Nou Camp, and Santiago Bernabéu. It was ranked as the 7th best stadium in the world by StadiumDB.
Since 2019, BOS has been part of the AZERIKIMYA structure.
In November 2024, the stadium hosted the COP29 UN Climate Conference, a major international event in Azerbaijan, reflecting its global importance and capacity.
AZERIKIMYA actively supports the development of chess both in Azerbaijan and across the region as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The company partners with the Azerbaijani national chess team and contributes to the organisation of international tournaments.
In 2021 and 2022, AZERIKIMYA sponsored the Vugar Hashimov Memorial tournaments. The 7th edition of the prestigious event was won by US grandmaster Fabiano Caruana.
In 2022, with the support of AZERIKIMYA, the first international chess tournament was held in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan — Shusha Chess 2022. Organised jointly with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, and the Shusha City State Reserve, the tournament was won by Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mamedyarov among men and Meri Arabidze (Georgia) among women.
In 2023, Azerbaijan hosted the Chess World Cup with the sponsorship of AZERIKIMYA, bringing together 206 of the world’s leading players. Azerbaijani representative Nijat Abasov reached the semi-finals, where he competed against world champion Magnus Carlsen.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) highly appreciated the organisation of the Chess World Cup in Baku and expressed its gratitude to Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the global event.
