Azerikimya Research and Development and Innovation was founded in December 2019. In June 2020, it received an R&D Centre license from the Ministry of Industry and Technology of Türkiye, enabling project support through grants.
The Centre implements around 20 R&D projects for Petkim and STAR Oil Refinery, focusing on three main directions in line with the Azerikimya-2035 strategy: increasing technological efficiency, promoting sustainable and low-carbon production, and applying digital innovations in production.
Located in Aliağa, Izmir, on 1,200 m², the Centre has six laboratories (rheology, catalyst, polymer characterisation, biotechnology, chemical analysis, and chromatography), a 400 m² pilot production area, and offices for polymer processing and catalyst testing. It has 25 employees with scientific degrees and 12 patents.
Azerikimya collaborates with leading Turkish universities, including ODTU, Boğaziçi, GTU, İYTİ, and Ege University. Projects include converting plastic waste into petrochemical raw materials and developing catalysts, autonomous air vehicles, process control sensors, and CO2-based chemicals. Future cooperation will expand to Sabancı and Bosphorus Universities, Baku Higher Oil School, and international companies in digital technologies, renewable energy, and biofuels.
The Centre’s innovations include a catalyst mixture at Petkim’s LDPE-T plant that increased production by 2% and reduced CO2 emissions by 11,000 tonnes/year, a catalyst particle analysis device for STAR Oil Refinery, an algorithm improving APC sensor estimates by 25%, and a corrosion monitoring model.
Azerikimya participates in “Horizon 2020” and “Horizon Europe” programmes for industrial sustainability and decarbonisation, receiving a total of €1 million from the EU for five projects. In 2021, grant support from Türkiye and the EU totalled $2.7 million, with additional funding for Digital Twin and 3D printed products projects.
