AZERIKIMYA

Contaminated Soil Remediation

The first oil wells were drilled in Bibiheybet in 1847 and later in Balakhani, leading to significant soil pollution due to early oil production practices.
AZERIKIMYA considers the remediation of oil-contaminated lands a key environmental responsibility.
Restoration Initiatives
Following the national environmental program (2006–2010), AZERIKIMYA began large-scale remediation of polluted areas, applying modern technologies and international best practices.
Monitoring & GIS System
Comprehensive environmental monitoring was conducted, including:
  • Identification of pollutants and sources
  • Mapping contamination using GIS
  • Creation of an ecological database
A feasibility study for the Absheron Peninsula was prepared by ECOREM S.A. (Belgium).
Bioremediation Approach
A bioremediation methodology was developed in cooperation with scientific institutions and approved by environmental authorities.
Activities include:
  • Environmental assessments
  • Selection of remediation methods
  • Submission of projects for state review
Rehabilitation Activities
Land restoration includes:
  • Recultivation and rehabilitation
  • Landscape-based recovery methods
Approaches depend on contamination level, pollutant type, and future land use.
